IT 460 Week 8 Assignment Database Concepts and Integration

IT 460 Week 8 Assignment

Database Concepts and Integration

Unit outcomes practiced in this assignment:

·         Understand normalization of data and its implications in a database.

·         Develop an Entity Relationship Diagram.

·         Communicate value of a document management system.

·         Relate networking, database, and web presence to a system as a whole.

Course outcomes practiced in this assignment:

·         IT460-5: Integrate models and diagrams.

Purpose

As a systems analyst, you have worked through requirements gathering for previous clients. Last week, your client asked for interface design recommendations; this week, the need is a database so that the project may proceed. You now have a chance to organize data in an Entity Relationship Diagram.

This assignment combines critical thinking, diagramming, and a little research. It is to be prepared in a Word document in APA format; Microsoft Visio is also required. Assistance with APA formatting and citation/referencing is available in the Writing Center.

Assignment Instructions and Requirements

Scenario:  Your work for Margaret Valley's new, little library continues this week. As explained previously, this library consists of just books and movies (DVDs) housed in the municipal building. This building is already set up for the internet and two computers have been dedicated for library use.

This week, you will develop an Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) for this scenario. Your instructor may provide you with more specific information on diagramming in seminar and/or the announcements, but you should also research the method specified below.

Part 1: ERD

Develop an ERD in Gane-Sarson style using Visio.  Follow these instructions:

·         Include these five entities: Book, DVD, Patron, Loan, and Fine. Do not add entities to this list.

·         For each entity, develop appropriate and thorough attributes.

·         Identify primary keys and foreign keys.

·         Use crow's feet to show relations between entities.

Other requirements and information:

·         Be thorough with your attribute lists. You will likely have seven or more per entity; please note this number is given as a general marker for detail, not a specific measurement.

·         The "Fine" entity is where late fines or lost material costs are identified. This entity might have fewer attributes than the other four entities.

·         Ensure that there is as little redundancy as possible. Disclaimer: make sure there is enough to connect foreign keys to primary keys.

·         No entity may stand alone.

·         Since the library is being built from an individual's personal holdings, assume that there is only one copy per book or DVD.

Part 2: Explanations

Write two paragraphs that wrap up the concepts this week.

Paragraph 1: Research.

·         In this paragraph, explain normalization in your own words, but cite the source(s) of the information using APA in-text citation. Include at least the descriptions of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd normal forms and why this is important.

·         Write at least 120 words.

·         Make sure the source you use is suitable for college work.

Paragraph 2: Critical Thinking.

·         Explain how visualization of ideas (such as last week's wireframe and this week's ERD) assist both the client and the technology team in making decisions.

·         Write at least 60 words.

Additional parameters:

·         Prepare an APA-formatted Word document for this assignment. Place each item in the paper with suitable subheadings, and present them in the order assigned above. Include a reference page with the full APA-formatted entry for the source (or sources) used for the normalization explanation.

Review all instructions above and the rubric below before submitting to the assignment dropbox.

Directions for Submitting Your Assignment

·         Name your Word® document with the following convention: IT460-Unit8-LastName-FirstName (using your own name).

·         Make sure you read all instructions carefully and review the rubric before submitting to the Dropbox for Unit 8.
