EDLD 5344 Week 3 Discussion

EDLD 5344 Week 3 Discussion

You may use a real scenario from your own experience or the scenario described below to guide your discussion comment this week.  If you have experience in dealing with a decision to restrict or not restrict student dress, student appearance, or other forms of student expression, you are welcome to comment on that experience.

Refer to the student handbook at your school or to local district policy or to district administrative guidelines to answer the discussion question below.  Keep in mind the guidance that we have studied this week from various sources of law.

As principal, how would you respond to the scenario described below or to a similar scenario that may have occurred on your own campus?  Succinctly outline the questions you might ask, the steps you would take, and any other salient details.  If you use your own experience, be sure not to use names and ensure that no one can be identified through your comments.

STUDENT EXPRESSION RIGHTS:

SCENARIO:  A group of students have begun wearing bracelets to your school that carry the message, “I Y boobies.”  The bracelets are sold by the American Cancer Society as a fundraiser.  The American Cancer Society is very active in your community and several of the prominent families in the community have lost loved ones to breast cancer recently.  You are aware that the bracelets have begun to cause disruptions in the classroom as reported by teachers and documented by discipline referrals and at least two fights between students have been directly attributable to the wearing or possession of the bracelets.

Summarize the steps you would take as principal.    Try to summarize succinctly within two paragraphs if possible.  Your original response to this question should be posted in the discussion board forum no later than Thursday night at 11:59 p.m.

By Sunday night at 11:59 p.m., you should have read postings of other students in your class and commented on at least two other postings.  Your comments should be more substantial than a commendation for a good job or simply acknowledging the posting.  Your comment should provide further clarification or could possibly even take a different position on a particular topic.  All postings should be professionally done.
