ENG 101 The Story of an Hour" Study Questions

Research Paper and Annotated Bibliography This major project will be broken up into 3 separate parts: • a response to “The Story of an Hour,” • an annotated bibliography containing at least 2, but no more than 4 secondary sources, • and a research paper that argues your response with source material to back it up. Each part has its own point total and those points will be added up to get a final grade for this project. Response: 25 points Annot. Bib: 50 points Final Paper: 125 points TOTAL 200 points RESPONSE PAPER For this first part, you will read Kate Chopin’s “The Story of the Hour” and form an opinion of what you think the story’s theme is. In this paper, you will also need to explain HOW Chopin conveys this theme. Is it through her characters? Is it through symbolism? Is it through a shift in point of view? You need to decide what tools Chopin uses to convince the reader of the purpose of her story. DO NOT RESEARCH THIS!!! This is what YOU think about the story. You need a paragraph where you explain what YOU think the theme is and then subsequent paragraphs should talk about the different tools (characters, symbolism, point of view, etc.) Chopin uses to get this theme across to the reader. WATCH the discussion video in LESSON 6 to help you with this. Length—1-1 ½ pages Format—Standard MLA with heading and title 25 points Annotated Bibliography In this section, you will find at least TWO but no more than FOUR articles that support what you claim in your response. These must be peer-reviewed, scholarly articles, and they MUST COME FROM JEFF STATE’S ONLINE LIBRARY. Google Scholar is not an option for these articles. You can use any of the sources I gave you in LESSON 6 AS LONG AS YOU VERIFY THEY ARE IN OUR LIBRARY. Length—2-4 sources Format—MLA with heading (Follow the example given to you on Blackboard. However, make sure to put your paper title after Annotated Bibliography) 50 point Final Research Paper This paper will combine your thoughts (Response paper) and the thoughts of others (Anno. Bib) into a cohesive, well-defined, well-defended argument. Your paper should have a well-developed introduction that begins with a hook and ends with a strong, well-constructed thesis that defines the story’s theme and the elements Chopin uses to convey this theme. EXAMPLE THESIS STATEMENT: In “The Story of an Hour,” Kate Chopin demonstrates the futility of female independence in Victorian society using her characters, symbolism, and foreshadowing. Your body paragraphs should discuss these elements and HOW Chopin uses them to convince the reader of her meaning. You will want to make sure each topic sentence has a clear connection to the thesis and that you transition between paragraphs. You will use quotes from both the short story (primary source) and your scholarly journals (secondary sources) as support for your argument. However, do not OVERQUOTE. This is YOUR paper not the sources’, so be sure to PREPARE the audience for the quote, INCORPORATE the quote properly, and then explain the significance of the quote. Limit yourself to 1-2 quotes from secondary sources per paragraph; do not uses excessively long quotes. Finally, you want a conclusion that has a little summary, but makes a final statement as to how Chopin’s theme has an impact beyond just the story. Length—2 ½ to 4 pages (2 ½ is an ABSOLUTE minimum) Format—Standard MLA with heading, title, and page numbers Proper in-text citations (parenthetical citations) Works Cited page (not included in the page count) **Note: this is NOT THE ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY** **You will include the short story on your Works Cited page 125 points Your submission should include ALL THREE PARTS. You can submit them separately or as one document
