ENG 101 ENG101 Rhetorical Analysis Pepsi Inspiration of Peace The Kendall Jenner Pepsi Commercial

Rhetorical Analysis Essay In this Rhetorical Analysis Essay, you will be analyzing a visual medium for rhetorical elements such as logos, pathos, and ethos. You can also include visual aspects (see notes on Visual Analysis) that contribute to these rhetorical elements as part of your discussion. Choose from one of the six ads located in the learning folder for this essay, or find one yourself. If you choose one besides the six options I provide, it must either be a printed ad from a magazine or a short video commercial no longer than 30 seconds. Introduction: Your introduction paragraph should include a response from you as a viewer. How does the ad make you feel, or what does it make you think? Does the ad make you want to do something? You can also include in your intro some contextual information about your advertisement (light research – see handout for how to cite websites), but a response will be sufficient. It would be best to use the response / feeling associated with the ad to set up the thesis statement, which will argue how the ad achieves this response and should lay the groundwork for your argument, guiding the structure of your essay. Body: Your essay should contain at least three body paragraphs. You can devote one body paragraph to logos, one to pathos, and one to ethos, or focus on only one appeal if you desire. However, you can have more than three body paragraphs if you choose. You might claim that an ad uses a mixture of rhetorical appeals and visual elements to convey its message, or that one rhetorical appeal or visual element deserves more than a single paragraph. Whatever the case, be sure to transition between paragraphs. Your body paragraphs should begin with topic sentences that support your thesis. Your support should be your own analysis, but can include quotes from outside sources to strengthen your argument, although quotes are not required at this stage. If you quote an outside source, be sure to cite it correctly in-text and include an entry on your works cited page. Conclusion: Do not forget to include a conclusion that echoes your thesis and reexamines the highlights of your body paragraphs which support your thesis. Assignment Requirements: • Must be typed in Times New Roman (12-point) or Calibri (11-point). Do not use a larger font • Must be 2 pages minimum, 3 pages maximum. (750 – 1000 words roughly). • Must be double-spaced. • Use 1” margins all around – this is standard in MS Word, as long as you don’t adjust anything. • Do not bold or underline anything. Within MLA guidelines, if you want to show emphasis, use italics instead of bolding or underlining. • Include an MLA heading on the left side of the first page and your last name and page numbers in the right corner. Examples and instructions are below. • Include a real title – this should be an abbreviation of your thesis statement. This does not mean it cannot be creative. When titling your essay, don’t put the title in quotes, and capitalize the important words and the first word. The title should be centered just below the MLA heading. • Although quotes are not required, they may help your argument. If you choose to quote an outside (secondary) source such as a website, consult the OWL at Purdue’s MLA guide to make sure you cite it correctly in-text as well as on the works cited page.
