Information technology contains three major components:
1. Hardware (such as computers).
2. Software (such as operating systems and office software).
3. Data (the facts, figures, and numbers collected from the daily activities of the organization). Â
Information systems contains those same components, with two additions:
1. People (such as the employees who work there).
2. Procedures (such as the step-by-step instructions employees follow to complete a sale). Â
IT = Hardware + Software + Data.
IS = IT + People + Procedures.
