Google Headquarters, Mountain View, California

“Just Google it.” Today, the term “Google” is synonymous with online searching, and it all started over two decades ago. In 1995, Larry Page and Sergey Brin met at Stanford University, and in 1996, they built their first search engine together, called BackRub. By 1998, they founded and incorporated Google Inc.

Just two years later, Google introduced AdWords, a self-service program for creating online ad campaigns which introduced the pay-per-click ad model. 2004 brought the introduction of Gmail, which is now one of the most widely-used free email services. Gmail’s key benefits include fast searching capabilities, large amounts of storage, and threaded email conversations. Also that year, Google Inc. went public.

Big changes continued for Google in 2005 when they launched Google Maps and Google Earth. To- day, Google Maps is also one of the most widely-used free navigation services, featuring live traffic, transit directions, and street-level imagery. In 2006, Google acquired YouTube, an online video sharing site. Google made the jump to mobile phones in 2007 when they announced Android, an open platform for mobile devices, and the extension into open source browsing happened in 2008 with the introduction of Google Chrome.

As of 2016, Google lists 51 products in their offerings. Their most popular products being: web search, Google Chrome, AdWords, YouTube, Google Play, Maps, Gmail, Drive, Docs, and Calendar. Google has a product to help with organization in almost all aspects of a modern tech-involved life.

Google may have started as just two men in a dorm room, but they have expanded far beyond their humble beginnings. In 2004, they relocated their head- quarters to Mountain View, California, to the complex most commonly referred to as the Googleplex, and as of 2016, Google has more than 70 offices in more than 40 countries.

All Google offices are unique, but there are common features to all: murals/decorations, shared workspaces (cubes, yurts, “huddles”), video games, pool tables, pianos, cafes and “microkitchens” stocked with healthy foods, and whiteboards for brainstorming. The offices at Google are indicative of the culture management has created. “It’s really the people that make Google the kind of company it is,” says the “About Google” section of their website. “We strive to maintain the open culture often associated with startups, in which everyone is a hands-on contributor and feels comfortable sharing ideas and opinions.”

Google is consistently ranked among the top companies to work for, both by their own employees and outside studies. Google has always made keeping their employees happy a priority, believing happy employees do better work. For this reason, the perks and benefits at Google are great incentives when trying to bring the best people to the company.

Some of Google’s most popular benefits include: sleep pods, company hosted talks with guests ranging from President Barack Obama to Conan O’Brien, maternity and paternity leave, free healthy food and snacks, the option to bring your dog to work, testing new tech products before release, and impressive death benefits.

But one of the most popular perks at Google is the people. With collaborative workspaces and walls meant to be written on, Google encourages communication and creativity amongst its employees. The company’s 80/20 rule gives employees the opportunity to be innovative. Employees must dedicate 80% of their time to their primary job, but the other 20% can be used for working on projects guided by their passions that they believe will help the company. They are also encouraged to read and continue learning.

In a company as large as Google with a relaxed atmosphere, communication will play a key role in success. When you give your employees benefits such as using 20% of their time as they wish, managing perceptions will be very important. A relaxed work atmosphere and an emphasis on employee well-being does not equate to a free-for-all.

“Companies have to make it easy to find out about what it’s really like to work there,” says Anil Saxena, a partner with Great Place to Work, the consulting and research firm that produces Fortune’s annual list of “the 100 Best Companies to Work For.”

Answer the following questions:

1. Discuss the communication process.

2. How can management at Google ensure that new hires have the right perception of what

working there will be like before they begin? Create a short script (500 words or less) explaining

what working at Google will be like.

3. As the company continues to grow, clear and direct communication with employees will need to

continue. What communication methods will work best for the environment at Google? Would formal or informal communication channels be more appropriate? How do you improve transmission to get the message out to everyone clearly?

4. When multiple employees are working together in a shared cube or workspace, how do you handle one-on-one communication, especially for sensitive topics?

5. How do you decide which medium for communication will be best?

6. How important is it to listen and give feedback when working in a creative environment?

7. If you were managing communication for Google, what would you do?
