University of Maine at Presque Isle Course Introduction to Creative Writing Milestone 1

University of Maine at Presque Isle Course Introduction to Creative Writing Milestone 1

You have reached a Milestone Activity! Please be sure you complete the Personalized Lesson above before continuing.

Milestone Activities are important stops along your educational journey to check your progress towards mastering the competency and to get feedback and guidance from your tutorial faculty. Please note: You must complete this Milestone Activity before moving on in this competency.

Milestones ask questions that touch upon concepts covered in previous Learning Activities and provide you with the opportunity to see concepts from the perspective of experts in the field, your tutorial faculty. This Milestone Activity is not graded and will not impact your score on your Final Assessment; however, your response must score a “Proficient” or “Exemplary” on each criterion, listed in the rubric below, in order to access and submit your Final Assessment.

To complete this Milestone Activity, read the question below and then provide your response in the comment box. In order to score a “Proficient” or “Exemplary”, your response must be thoughtful and substantive, and you must reference or cite content from this competency. Your tutorial faculty will use the rubric to determine if your post shows the depth of thought required to successfully complete this Milestone. Let’s get started!

Remember: This competency is likely a little different than you're used to. In this program, all the milestones after this one are creative writing prompts and assignments. For example, the next milestone is to write two particular types of poems. When you submit those poems as your milestone, as long as you have followed the instructions and submitted those particular types of poems, I'll give you lots of feedback and affirm you. You will then take that feedback and use it to revise that piece for your final poetry-draft in your portfolio (the final assessment). This particular milestone is a little different in that I need to see your plan for obtaining and participating in the workshop process. See the prompts below.

This assessment contains 2 parts--both parts must be submitted, before the instructor will review:

Part 1: Find a resource for writing feedback--this is a place or group (either close to home, or on the web) you will use or ask to support your writing by offering commentary. Share a few sentences about the resource and how you will use it.

Part 2: Include your plan for how you will show your instructor the feedback you received from your resource (Google doc comments? Photos of printed comments? Signed emails from your cohort? Screenshots of the feedback in the social media group? Transcripts of the live chat?).

Note: if you are struggling to find a group, remember that you can use the UMPI Writing Center. To schedule an appointment with the Writing Center, go to https://umpi.mywconline.com, click on "register" (in blue) if it is your first time accessing the schedule, and then you will see the schedule to make an appointment. It can take a week to get an appointment, so schedule ahead of time so you have some draft ready for review and feedback. It is critical that you obtain substantive feedback. I will not accept grammatical revision notes or comments like "I like this." Instead, I need to see that your workshop group is providing you detailed feedback about the quality of your writing and the impact of your content on your readers.

Ideas:

·        Join a Facebook Group for writers. You can then post your work (or parts of it) and get feedback from other writers by way of comments. To submit your workshop feedback group, just post screenshots (photos of your screen with Snippit, Jing, or Print-Screen button on your computer to copy and then paste into a document)

·        Check out NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), which has a year round writing group freely available online, that you can join and find other writers to workshop with. Post screenshots or links with documents that show you have constructive feedback

·        Post in the class discussion board to see if others signed up for this class might want to group  up with you, and then you can use Google Drive to share your workshops.

·        Contact your local library and see if they host any writer's groups. If they do, ask if you can sign up. If you workshop in person, be sure to get notes or images of handwritten notes on your documents demonstrating feedback.

·        Try emailing an old English teacher or another Writing Professor to see if they might give you some constructive feedback. Offer to mentor a high school class by giving them feedback in exchange.
