JWI 551 Week 4 Discussion The Patient Experience as a Measure of Quality

The CMS website - Care Compare - provides information about standards of care at more than 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals and healthcare facilities in the United States. In addition to hospitals, the site includes ratings for long-term care facilities, home care agencies, and other care providers.

For this week's discussion, complete both Step 1 and Step 2 below.

Step 1: Use the Care Compare site to do your research, as indicated below:

·        Go to the Care CompareLinks to an external site. website

·        Choose 2 U.S. based hospitals or healthcare facilities in the same city or community

·        For each facility, find its overall star rating (number of stars)

·        For each facility, review its patient satisfaction survey star rating tab (patient experience)

Review the information contained on the website to understand how the data is calculated and what it represents.

Step 2: When you have completed your research, answer the questions below:

·        In terms of patient experience metrics, how do these two healthcare facilities perform, compared to other facilities in the state and nationwide?

·        For each facility, does there appear to be a relationship between the patient survey star rating and the hospital's overall star rating? Comment on this relationship.

·        What do you think is the value of including patient satisfaction as a component of a healthcare facility’s overall quality star rating? How is it weighted in comparison to other metrics? Do you agree with this weighting?

For your reply to classmates, focus on the last question, about the value of using the patient satisfaction as a component of the overall quality metric. Pick classmates whose initial posts contained different insights that impressed you. Explain what struck you the most about their idea or example.
