Reflect: In Week 1 you had some time to consider scholarly and popular sources and work on the first three steps of the research process. This week we will implement the final three steps of the research process: (1) locate and evaluate information, (2) organize and synthesize information, and (3) review and communicate information. Part of evaluating sources is understanding if they are credible. We have some ways to do this. One way is to use the CRAAPO test.

This discussion is a wonderful opportunity to develop your knowledge of the characteristics of scholarly and popular sources and to find credible sources in the library. You will accomplish this by searching for two articles related to your topic and questions chosen in Week 1—one of these articles will be your scholarly source, and one of these articles will be your popular source. You will use these same scholarly and popular sources throughout the course and on the Week 5 Research Topic Short Essay.

The ability to recognize the characteristics of different sources is important as you strategically search for information that matches your specific needs. Have fun with it!

Write: In your initial discussion forum post, share the scholarly and popular sources that you found in the library, and include the following details:

  • Popular source. Use the CRAAPO test to describe how your popular source is appropriate for your research. Your description of each element of CRAAPO should be at least one sentence.
  • Scholarly source. Use the CRAAPO test to describe how your scholarly source is appropriate for your research. Your description of each element of CRAAPO should be at least one sentence.
  • Differences. Discuss the importance of understanding the differences between scholarly and popular sources.
  • CRAAPO and informational literacy. Explain how using CRAAPO will help you find credible sources.
  • Your research process. Predict how you used the steps of the research process (The first three steps were used in Week 1, and the second three were used for this discussion.).

Note: If the sources pass the CRAPPO test, you will use these throughout the rest of the course in the assignments and the Week 5: Research Topic Short Essay.

Your initial post should be a minimum of 250 words and is due on Day 3 (Thursday).

Guided Response:

Review your classmates’ posts and respond to at least two of your peers by Day 7. Each peer response should be a minimum of 50 words. In your peer responses, share

  • your thoughts on the scenarios your peers described and one additional way one additional reason the source is appropriate for the research
  • and additional perspectives on the importance of knowing the difference between the types of sources or the drawbacks of using the wrong type of source.

An important part of your learning involves the exchange of ideas and feedback with your peers and instructor. It is also tied to your earned discussion grade’s participation and critical thinking components. In your responses share ideas, explore different perspectives, and think critically about your classmates’ posts.
