Reflect:

Information has value in how it can be accessed and used. Information can be used to educate and affect change or be leveraged as a commodity. Consider how your personal information can be gathered from online platforms and monetized or how organizations can use the information to promote their interests and influence people. As a student, you have access to databases of information in the digital library, such as journal articles, ebooks, newspapers, videos, and reference works without costly subscriptions. Since information is valuable, it is important to use it ethically and you should not be charged for ethical information while in school.

For this discussion you will explore how information is valued and leveraged, and why it is important as a consumer and creator of information you properly attribute the original ideas of others.

Write icon

Write:

  • Share what interested you about one of the articles you selected for your research topic.
  • Ethics. Describe why the ethical use of information is important.
  • Two strategies. Describe two strategies you could apply to ensure the information from the article is used ethically if you were writing an assignment for class or using it in a presentation at work.
  • Value and ownership. Reflect on the value and ownership of the information in the article. In your reflection,
    • Explain why this information may have been created and shared. What is the value?
    • Discuss two advantages and two disadvantages of using this single source to form an opinion or to make a major decision.
  • Evidence using ICE and APA. Provide evidence from the article to support your reflection using the ICE method from Section 5.3 of the textbook.
    • Provide the APA reference for article you examined.
Your initial post is due on Day 3 (Thursday).

Guided Response:

Review your classmates’ posts and respond to at least two of your peers by Day 7. Each peer response should be a minimum of 50 words.

In your peer responses, consider sharing

  • any suggestions you may have for your peers regarding how they can use information ethically in either an academic or a professional setting,
  • your insights on what your peers shared about the value and ownership of information and why that is important,
  • and your thoughts on what your classmates shared about the advantages and disadvantages of using a single source.
An important part of your learning involves the exchange of ideas and feedback with your peers and instructor. It is also tied to the participation and critical thinking components of your earned discussion grade. In your responses share ideas, explore different perspectives, and think critically about your classmates’ posts.
