ACultural Analysis of Augmented Reality
Our first major assignment for this class asks us tocomplete a short research paper, giving us the opportunity to develop our ownquestion for independent scholarly analysis on the cultural effects ofaugmented reality technologies.
Building an argument based upon your own observations andthe academic work of others constitutes an intricate and often time-consumingpractice where ideas are tested, researched and reviewed over an extendedperiod time. We will thus begin this assignment with a formal proposal, supported by an annotated bibliography of possible research sources. Afterreceiving comments and an assessment for this proposal, you will then continuethe assignment next week to produce a full paper of 8 to 12 pages, followingthrough from your thesis and matching your ideas with expert opinions on thetopic you are investigating.
All we want this week, however, is your proposal. The formatfor the proposal stage of your paper is outlined here. When completed, I askyou to upload your work as a single word document to this link. The assignmentid due by 11pm on 17 July2016(10 marks)
Proposal Format:
Due to the short length of this assignment (8 to 12 pages),your proposal need only be two paragraphs or 300 words maximum. The proposalshould begin by stating your general question of research, while brieflyexplaining why you think this issue is important and needs to be studied atsome length.
Background Research:
In support of your personal interest in the issue, you mightthen offer at least two examples of what other established researchers havealready published on it. Traditionally, research proposals will offer varyingopinions on the topic at hand, before subsequently summarizing the author’s ownperspective, you might then consider concluding your proposal by aligning yourviews with one or two of the opinions you’ve chosen to feature. Another optionis to conclude by differentiation your perspective as wholly unique, announcingthe deficits or problems you see in established views.
Annotated Bibliography:
On a separate page, following your proposal please include afull annotated bibliography, listing at least 3 works you intend to use in yourwork. The bibliography should follow either and APA or MLA format. Whileincluding short explanations as to why you feel each source is important toyour work.
Below you will find a list of possible topics for thisresearch project. Your research will, of course, depend upon the topic youchoose and the specific levels of access to information you currently have. Please note that these topics are meant only as suggestions for you toconsider. You are more than welcome to build your proposals around a topic youyourself choose.

· The practice of gaming seems to be increasinglyvaluable in our culture, with many common cultural practices, like simplystrolling in a public place, consumer shopping or even participating in a classor workshop now including gaming components. The popular smart phone app,Foursquare, awards points from walking around a city, visiting shops and makingpurchases. Professors give students “badges” in course in addition toconventional forms of assessment. Critics call this the “gamification” ofculture. Research and discuss this trend in our current society.
· Many cultural critics and philosophers considerthe ongoing blending of technology with the physical world, beginning with theindustrial era, as a sign that humanity, too, has come to an end. Our currentculture, these philosophers argue, has integrated individual human existencewith mechanical systems to the extent that we may define the entire era as “posthuman”.Are we in a posthuman world? What arguments support this contention; what argumentscounter it?
· When sound was added to cinema in the late1920s, many directors and movie-goers complained that this so calledtechnological improvement was somehow cheapening the pure art from of file, distractingus with an unnecessary special effect. In the current era, many people feel similarityabout 3 D cinema, arguing that such effects are unnecessary and distracting. But perhaps a few years from now, all movies will be 3D, and many will wonderjust what was so special about 2D file. What do current directors think aboutAugmented Reality? Can this new developmentpossiblyreplace cinema altogether asthe dominant visual are from of the 21stcentury?
· Digital information technologies combined withan increasingly powerful online network spanning the entire globe make itpossible for governments and corporates institutions to surveil populations toa degree never previously historically possible.
