Prepare: Beyond their entertainment value, successful films often strike a cultural nerve by speaking to a pressing social concern or telling us something about ourselves in such a way that these films become a part of the fabric of our culture. Certain films, like The Breakfast Club, Boyz n the Hood, Juno, Call Me by Your Name, Moonlight, or West Side Story, might resonate with us at a particular stage of our lives and help us make sense of our own experiences. Other films, such as Do the Right Thing, The Big Short, The Hate U Give, Dallas Buyers Club, American Sniper, Get Out, or Parasite, directly address deeper social issues and affect our various perspectives. Are there specific instances when this has been true for you? If so, what are they and why?
