ENG 225 Week 3 Discussion Editing and Cinematography Transition and Movement

Editing and Cinematography: Transition and Movement [WLO: 2] [CLO: 3]

Prepare:

As you prepare to write this discussion, take a few moments to do the following:

  • Read Chapter 6 in your course textbook and review Chapter 5 from last week.
  • Review the grading rubric for this discussion.
  • Watch all the following movie clips at least twice, paying special attention to the cinematic elements of editing (the transition from shot to shot) and cinematography (the framing and movement of the camera).
  • Locate at least one new film clip from another film that shows the same or similar technique as the provided examples to embed in your post.

Editing: Visual transitions between shots that work to move the story forward:

Cinematography: Camera angles, types of shots, framing, and color all working to set a particular mood:

Reflect:

Think about how you watch films and how the aesthetic elements of editing and cinematography work together, with lighting and mise-en-scène, to create meaning for the audience.

After watching all clips, consider the following:

  • Editing: What analysis can you make about the visual transitions between shots that work to move the story forward? Note the specific type of transition and camera movement. What does this tell us about the character and the story?
  • Cinematography: What analysis can you make about the placement and movement of characters and props in the scene as they relate to camera shots, color, lighting, and other elements of cinematography? What does the camera’s subject and movement tell us about what’s happening in the scene?

Write:

In at least 200 words, write a post in which you

  • Analyze one selected clip from the “Editing” section, paying close attention to the use of editing in one short paragraph. In your analysis, describe the transitions and note the type of transitions used between specific shots and the overall effect this has on the scene.
  • Analyze one selected clip from the “Cinematography” section, paying close attention to the use of cinematography in one short paragraph. In your analysis, describe the way specific shots are composed, paying attention to the camera angles, types of shots, framing, color, and the overall effect this has on the scene.
  • Evaluate the dramatic impact of each of these two scenes and interpret each scene based on your analysis. In your view what mood, symbolism, or meaning results from the scene’s creative editing and cinematography?
  • Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) or scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. You must use at least two outside sources, in any combination of embedded video clips, still photos, or scholarly sources. All sources should be documented in APA StyleLinks to an external site. as outlined by the University of Arizona Global Campus Writing CenterLinks to an external site. Please view the video Posting in a Discussion in CanvasLinks to an external site. for guidance on how to integrate multimedia with your response.

Guided Response: (due by Monday, Day 7). Respond substantively (150 to 175 words) to at least two of your classmates’ posts. In your responses, reference your initial post and show how your ideas relate to those of your peers, extending the discussion. Provide support for your position. Substantive responses use theory, research, experience, or examples to support ideas and elaborate on the discussion topic.
