Mise-en-scène refers to different visual elements used in making a film, some of which you have already analyzed in this course; and sound contributes to the context in which we perceive the mise-en-scène. The role of actors in a film, their costuming and makeup, and their physical positioning and movements within the frame are all part of the mise-en-scène. Sound includes what the actors say, what they hear, and shapes the tone and mood of each scene. When we think of actors in a world of sound, we gain a clear sense of the environment they inhabit, and how we should feel about them in that environment.
