The War Between the United States and Mexico, adduces the effects the war
had on Mexico; the most important being the emotional toll on the Mexican
spirit. Since the war was fought completely on Mexican soil, the cities, roads,
and ports became a war zone. The total destruction of buildings and the
occupation of their Capital by Americans was an enormous blow to the
Mexican morale. As in every war, many lives were lost; this loss of Mexico’s
population created widows and orphans and the loss of laborers cause a
rapid decline in agriculture and mining. The upper class was also hurting in
Mexico, many political climbs were ceased. Miller exposes the nation’s
political havoc when he writes, “...there were seven presidents and 10
different ministers of foreign relations during the two years of war.” (Miller)
