This topic is something that I learned in high school and has fascinated me. There is a reason behind the fact that more men are affected by color blindness. It is because color blindness is a gene on the X chromosome. Men have one X and one Y chromosome. Women have two X chromosomes. Women have a back up chromosome which makes its it more difficult to be color blind where as men just have the one X and once it is there it is more likely to appear. women can carry the gene but not be affected like a man because of the double X chromosome. It works like a back up. However some women still do have colorblindness as well. According to a PDF from mayo, there are about 300000 cases in the US every year. Colorblindness doesn't mean the person sees no color. Most of the time it is a problem distinguishing red and green colors. It is mostly inherited but it can be caused by some eye diseases.
