Earth's magnetic field resembles the magnetic field produced by a large bar magnet. Bar magnets have ends that are oppositely charged. The magnet ends are usually designated by "+" and "-" or "N" (for north) and "S" (for south). This opposite polarity causes magnetic objects to align parallel to the magnetic field produced by the bar magnet. Although Earth does not actually have a bar magnet inside, it behaves as if it did.
