XVS Pharmacy

Week Five – CIS691-T201 Database Capstone (2165-1)

  • The following is a high level scenario of what you will be developing this week:You're a data architect at a large pharmacy chain (XVS pharmacy). XVS Pharmacy incorporates an Inmon 3NF or close to 3NF Physical data model, and Kimball star Schema Semantic/Reporting layer. Last week you developed the Mapping Design. This week you will develop your Star Schema (For many of you this will be the first time you have developed a Star Schema. I want you to try your best. I will provide lots of feedback and we will modify your Start Schema over the next several weeks). When developing your Start Schema remember facts are numeric and are addative. Facts can be added together to generate a new meaningful value. For example all sales amount facts can be added to generate a new total sales amount. Patent ID is also numeric but you could not add Patent ID values together to generate a new meaningful value thus it is not a fact but a dimension.Dimensions give context or meaning to your facts. Dimensions are typically not numeric. Examples of dimensions include names, descriptions address etc. Here are some hints to help you with your design:1. The grain of the start schema is quantity_ordered by brand, store and prescription. (hint notice it is not by drug but by brand)2. The only measure in your fact table is quantity_ordered (you will not use all your attributes in your 3NF model)
    3. There are no slowly changing dimensionsHere are some business rules that should also help you with your design:I want to measure quantity ordered by category name and brand nameI want to measure quantity ordered by region nameI want to measure quantity ordered by prescription id
I want to measure quantity ordered by patent name Assignments for this week include a Star Schema using Visio, and discussion forum posts.REMINDER: If you use a reference as a source for your work products, you must use the APA in-text citation format to credit the author.Assignment 5.1 – Star Schema Development (70 points)* Make sure your Start Schema uses Crow's Feet Notation. You have all your attributes for each entity clearly labeled and include a PK for your Fact and Dimension tables. I also want to see all appropriate FKs on your Fact table.* Data Types are not critical within your model.* The standard at XVS pharmacy is to generate surrogate keys based on the natural key from your relational model. I want to see you use surrogate keys as your PKs in your model but I still want the natural keys carried forward and in your dimensional tables.
