Discussion 1:
The container store has a moto that “one great person = 3 good people.” By this theory, they only hire great people who care about others and the desire to be helpful to other people. Their goal is to motivate their employees by creating a work environment that instills strong values and empowerment. Eton Mayo’s Hawthorne studies suggests that pay is not the primary motivator. Kip Tindell, President and CEO and Garret Boone, Chairman and Co-founder of The Container Store, believe that communication is the key to everything. They work closely with employees personally daily to work on weaknesses and enhance strengths. They want all their employees to know that they care about them and want them to care about each other. To achieve this, they are open and honest about every aspect of the company including their finances. The Container Store uses a job enrichment motivational strategy by motivating workers through the job itself. Other job enrichment strategies would be job enlargement. They do this by cross-training employees to understand everyone else’s jobs, which also prepares them to have the confidence and empowerment to make management decisions and know their decision will be backed up. They created a company where employees feel like they are part of a second family. Empowerment, strong values, cross-training, and open communication are the keys to a successful company and work environment.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs theorized that people are motivated to satisfy unmet needs. These needs include, Physiology Needs, Safety Needs, Social Needs, Esteem Needs, and Self-Actualization Needs. Physiology needs includes things like food, water, and shelter. The Container Store pays their employees 50-100% above average pay which is the highest in the industry and in turn, allows employees to meet these needs. They provide Safety needs by providing emotional security. Employees feel emotionally secure by being part of an environment with proper values stressed, integrity, honesty, and open communication. People desire to work for a company that has created a family like atmosphere because it makes them feel love, acceptance, and part of a group. This is known as the Social needs that the company provides. Esteem needs is the need for recognition and acknowledgement from others. The Container Store does this by recognizing and interacting with each employee formally and informally, whether it’s by writing personal notes, or a phone calls. The last Hierarchy need is Self-Actualization needs. This means the company motivates employees to reach their full potential. When employees work for a company that motivates them and empowers them to succeed, they will want to stay working for that company. Which is why their annual turnover being 15-25% compared to the average 90-100% in the industry.
Discussion 2:
Professor and Classmates,
WOW! I want to work for the Container Store! This place is fantastic! If I ever open my own business, which is a long term goal of mine, I want to run is just like Mr. Tindell and Mr. Boone.
The management team is kind of picky when it comes to hiring new employees, they aren't afraid of holding off and hiring the next person if they feel the current interviewee isn't the right fit. Although, I'm not sure how they can know so much about a person in only a short interview for the selected position. I hope we learn about selectivity in the future of the term. They won't compromise for an average person because 1 avg person=3 lousy people. (Tindell, n.d)
Maslow's hierarchy pyramid of needs is quit simple, and makes a lot of sense. There are five section to the pyramid: (these are listed from top (smallest portion) to bottom (biggest portion)
~self-actualization- This process is the process in which The Container Store motivates the full potential within their employees. You never know if what the person you hire will become while working with you. They could have tremendous potential.
~esteem needs- It's important to recognize and acknowledge your employees. This will motivate them to become and best all while staying positive and keeping that happy personality the store prides itself on.
~social needs- I think it's fantastic the whole team at The Container Store feels like they are all extended family. I'd love to be able to come to work and feel like I belong, and have a say so in important decisions. It's nice to be included in all the financial aspect and decisions.
~safety needs- Management prides themselves knowing they practice integrity, honesty, and open communication.
~physiological needs- Employees have a sense of satisfaction with the way they are treated. They are one of the top paying companies, which equals their employees able to dress and take care of themselves for the better.
Thank you,
Julia
