Studies have shown that someone who starts to smoke relatively early in life tends to be a smoker for the rest of his/her life. Hence it is in the tobacco industry’s interest for people to start smoking as early as possible. At the same time, studies indicate that smoking is harmful to one’s health. All Smokers Cigarette Company advertises heavily in college newspapers and hires students as representatives to hand out free samples of cigarettes in the hope those students will begin smoking the All Smokers brand. A campus student organization—Students for a Healthy Environment---- petitions the college president to forbid the advertisements as well as the practice of distributing the samples. Another student organization—Students for the Protection of Fundament Rights—opposes the petition. Should the practices be discontinued? Why or Why not?
