Part 1: Screening Analysis

I HAVE DONE MOST OF THIS ASSIGNMENT! PLEASE HELP ME TO FIX WHAT I HAVE DONE AND FINISH THE REST OF THEM! THANKSPart 1: Screening Analysis (15 marks)

  • Working individually (but feel free to walk in pairs or more), choose a route you think will take you through a small sampling of different land use types (e.g., residential, institutional, commercial, parkland).
  • If you are taking this course while on the WLU campus then you can pick the campus or a local neighbourhood. If you are taking this course from a distance then conduct your scan in your local neighbourhood. While you are walking, you should be observing and recording your observations individually. Spend approximately one hour and identify 5-8 interconnected social-ecological issues. The issues you identify may be small in scale or more significant. When identifying the issues, consider how they might be connected to events and forces outside Waterloo, the region, etc.
  • Record your observations and notes using the table below. Remember, some of the issues you identify may be obvious (an overflowing waste receptacle), but others may not appear as obvious on the surface. Think back to Lab 1 to remind yourself of some of the key interactions among resources, the environment and people. How are your interactions linked to what you are viewing in your visual assessment?
  • Complete the Environmental Scan chart provided in this assignment (10 marks)
  • you need to provide a concise but complete entry for each issue and description/discussion (rows and columns) in the chart (bullets are fine but avoid one word entries)
  • include a description of the issue
  • details on the extent and location
  • evaluation of the significance of the issue
  • recommendations or solutions to the issue
  • Provide a brief summary of the path you took and the areas around the campus you examined. Create a map and highlight your route. You can choose to use google maps to create your map: (see Lab Cast Presentation). Ensure that you note observations on the map and also document issues if possible with photos. (5 marks)

Part 2: Results and Discussion - Key Issues Assessment (maximum 1-1.5 pages – single spaced) (10 marks)

Answer the following questions:

  1. Which do you think are the three most important issues? In your response, rank all of your issues and briefly explain your rationale for the ranking of the top three issues. (3 marks)
  2. Would you consider these three issues relatively major or minor? Why? (2 marks)
  3. How do these three issues you identified relate to problems of population, lifestyles and consumption, and/or our societies desire for economic growth and expansion? In what way? (3 marks)
  4. Are the issues a local scale issue, or are they connected across scales in some way (economically, ecologically)? (2 marks)

Part 3: Conclusions and Recommendations (maximum ½ page) (5 marks)

  • Based on your assessment above, what do you think the Environmental Services Department could do to address or alleviate the situation? Offer some concrete (and feasible) recommendations for change. (5 marks)

Reminders:

  • As mentioned earlier, you are encouraged to include a selected number of digital photographs (if you have access to a digital camera) or other illustrations to enhance your report and highlight the issues you are discussing.
  • You are encouraged where feasible to place your recommendations “in context”. For example, the weblinks above highlight several environmental initiatives of the City of Waterloo. Can any of your recommendations be linked to these existing initiatives?
