Title Slide
Hello, my name is Tekara Weekes, I am here to tell you a little about Social Media in the
workplace.
Social Media is defined as the collective of online communication channels dedicated to
community based input, interaction, content sharing and collaboration.
Social Media is everywhere, no matter where we go we cannot get away from it because it
us easily accessible from almost anywhere.
Smartphones, tablets, laptops and personal computers. According to an article written by Jennifer L. Naeger “94% of all businesses with a
marketing department use social media”.
Why do you think this is?
o To increase brand awareness
o To communicate and connect with potential clients or even future employees. Many companies use Social Media as a way of getting information how every important it
maybe to its employees and customers.
Many companies as we've seen have facebook pages especially for their business, it is a
great way of "showing off" what they have to offer a client.
Companies also use social media as a way of keeping employees informed about
upcoming events, cahnges to policy or any other helpful information that they want to put
out.
Communication is also a very important aspect of a business and some companies use
social media as part of their employeer/employee communication factor like starting a
compamy blog and posting up photos of the last company barbeque for other staff to see
and enjoy. 6 As you can see from the previous slide technology is rapidly changing the way business is
conducted in this new era.
Social media has become one of the better ways to commuicate with different types of
people besides email and text messaging.
Once marketed properly a business can get through to millions of people through social
media platforms. In an article by Daniel Handman, some Social media user statistics were listed.
Facebook 1.1 billion users
Instagram 600 million users
Twitter 500 million users
Snapchat 300 million users
LinkedIn 225 million users
Pinterest 100 million users
There are many others not mentioned here like YouTube, Google plus, Tumblr, Wordpress,
Reddit just to name a few others. Now we will discuss the Pros and Cons of Social Media in the workplace.
In a sense Social Media is "good for business", Social Media also comes without a large
marketing price tag, it is cheaper than trying to market your business on the larger world
wide web, I'm not saying companies dont have a footprint on the internet by ways of their
own website but they can definitely lead traffic to their website through their social media
platforms.
Social Media helps employers connect with potential employees as well as current
employees.
Social media also helps to nurture brand loyalty by encoraging patrons to "like" their page
and to stop by to see all the new and exciting things happening with the company.
And it also proves to be a great networking asset. 7 For employees Social media can decrease productivity if it is not managed effectively.
Employers will have to continually monitor their employees social media behavior at work.
Their will be risks of malware and hacking while using such sites on company issued
hardware and there will also be a need for bigger and more expensive malware, spam and
virus detection systems to be installed company wide to prevent security and privacy risks. It is important for employers to have some kind of Social Media Policies in place.
These policies must educate employees on safe social network practices and they are put
in place to protect the company from misuse by employees.
No company wants their image jeapordized or tarnished because of one emplyees actions
online.
Once it's posted on social media or any other online platform, it can't be unsaid or
unposted, which is why many employers are very cautious when dealing with employees
and social media
Employers are always updating and changing policies when it comes to online behaviors
namely social media and internet use.
Many employers also encourage employees to be professional on their own personal page
because their behavio, the photos they post or the language they use on their own
personal page can reflect back on the company, especially so if the employee has the
company listed in their profile. Here we will discuss some reasons why workers turn to social media.
A survey was conducted by the Pew research center. 2,003 American Adults were
surveyed. The survey asked Americans who are employed full- or part-time about eight
different ways they might use social media while on the job and here are the results... 8 34% use social media while at work to take a mental break from their job
27% to connect with friends and family while at work
24% to make or support professional connections
20% to get information that helps them solve problems at work 17% to build or strengthen personal relationships with coworkers
17% to learn about someone they work with
12% to ask work-related questions of people outside their organization
12% to ask such questions of people inside their organization Do you know using social media can get you fired?
According to Careerbuilder,
28% of employers report that they've fired people for using the Internet for non-workrelated activity (such as shopping online or checking out Facebook) during the workday.
18% have dismissed employees because of something they posted on social media. In closing, I'm going to leave you with this…
Social media extends far beyond “Liking” the viral video showing grumpy cats. The power
that lies within the global influence of social media is one that can streamline the way
information is shared within your company, provide an outlet for business promotion,
welcome new employees who can further business goals, and enhance a solid sales and
marketing platform. Now is the time for asking those questions that you may have been afraid to ask. If there
are no further questions, I would like to thank you very much for taking the time to listen
to me on the value of Social Media in the Workplace. 9 10 Comments 11 12 13 14 15 16 17
