Assignment 1
Village Square Community Health Center. 2 EFFECTIVE TEAM LEADER
A Manager is a person or leader responsible for getting work done through others. A
successful leader is someone who inspires employees to carry out task that helps fulfil
organizational goals as effectively as possible. There are four functions of Management. Planning
which is determining organizational goals and a means for achieving them. Organizing, deciding
where decisions are been made, who will do what jobs and tasks, and who will work for whom.
Leading, inspiring and motivating workers to work hard to achieve organizational goals. Controlling
which involves monitoring progress toward goal achievement and taking corrective action when
progress is not been made. An effective manager (Leader) mediates and tempers the organization
requirements to the needs of persons in a way that is organizationally enhancing. (Dr.
Michael Adeniyi Adewale 2007). If a manager lacks the natural leadership talent, the possibility that
he or she will be successful lessens considerably. There are four different kinds of managers, Top
Managers, Middle managers, First-Line Managers and Team Leaders.
Patricia is an Administrative Support Clerk V, at the Village Square Community Health
Center. She has been in this place for over 18 years. I would best describe her as a team leader
due to the roles she plays, facilitating team activities toward accomplishing a goal. Village Square
Community Health Center is part of Alberta Health Services, Public Health Vaccination Clinic.
Village Square Community Health Clinic comprises of the Manager, Vaccine Coordinator,
Registered Nurses, LPNS, Administrative Support V, and the Administrative Support Clerical staffs.
As a team leader, Miss Patricia oversees the duties of all clericals, procuring of all supplies
needed. She organizes staff meetings, intensive staff trainings for all clerical staffs to achieve goals
and visions of the clinic. She sometimes play the roles of a figurehead, disturbance handler, and
disseminator. She is also responsible for organizing, supervising of our day-to-day activities.
Customer services is a very important part of our day to day activities in the clinic, so Patricia
ensures all clericals make professional growth and dedication to customer services, She ensures 3 EFFECTIVE TEAM LEADER
every staffs knows and plays their roles and duty. Village Square Community Health center is the
only Immunization clinic in the NE area of Calgary, which makes it one of the busiest clinics due to
the high population in the region. She ensures there is constant supplies of different type’s needles
used in clinic, vaccines, books etc. Patricia sees to it that all supplies and equipment’s are
available and well organized for smooth running of the clinic and updates all changes in policies
and procedures to keep us up to date. She assesses and monitors the clinic’s goals and creates a
realistic plan of action for meeting goals. Much like writing a business plan, a management plan
takes into consideration short and long-term strategies. She shares workload
evenly among her clericals, she knows everyone’s strengths, and she monitors everyone’s
progress and taking corrective action, she is an interactive team leader. Being a team Leader is a
very tedious one, in the sense that she is responsible for facilitating the team’s performances and
goals. A Team leader helps their team to plan, schedule work, and learn to solve problems.
Patricia has a Creative and Initiative skills, she goes to a lot of team leader’s meetings and
seminars, which helps find the causes of problems and not the symptoms, and that helps to solve
the problems for the benefit of the Village Square Vaccination Center. When the manager is busy,
she delegates Patricia play some interpersonal, decisional roles and informational roles.
Due to visible minority and multicultural diversity, the uncertainty and complexity of the
external environment is high. I would say almost all of our clients are immigrants from different
parts of the world with different languages and cultures. So most of our clients speak little or no
English, which tends to make communication very difficult and sometimes that causes
misunderstanding, conflict and tension between clients and staffs in the clinic. Time management
is also a huge part of our daily activities and most of our clients are not time sensitive causing clinic
to lag behind as we try as much as possible to accommodate everyone. Village Square Community
Health Center is a stressful environment. Visible elements of the culture that are congruent with the 4 EFFECTIVE TEAM LEADER
manner in which the clinic is characterized are; late opening of clinic schedules and expected to be
filled a soon as possible and booking errors. Due to the busyness of the clinic, there is always
constant interruption from clients, nurses and coworkers, therefore making it a strong culture.
Alberta Health Service has values, vision and mission, which are compassion, accountability,
respect, excellence and safety. These guide our actions and behaviors to achieve excellent patient
and family-centered healthcare for all. It also helps all employees with ideas, ways on how to
improve in their work areas.
For over 18 years been a team leader, Patricia has proven to be a true team leader and a good
example, she is an asset to the Village Square Community Health Center. In conclusion, in order for
someone to carry out all of these responsibilities in an effective and efficient he or she must have
proper and necessary skills to do so. These skills can be classified as human skills, technical skills,
conceptual skills and motivational skills. As we have seen, the Village Square Community Health
Center has an individual who is up to task with all the endeavours of the clinic. References
