Important Note: You must create your initial thread first so that you can view other threads in this forum. Note that once your initial post is created, you cannot delete or edit it further. Make sure your initial post is clearly articulated and easily understood in this forum.

Prior to this discussion you will complete a running record by taking notes as you listen to a recording of Isabelle, a student who is orally reading the text. You will then score the reading and discuss Isabelle’s Running Record with the class. Carefully follow the following directions:

  • Review Coding and Scoring Errors At-A-Glance (Fountas & Pinnell, 2008)
  • Using the symbols from Coding and Scoring Errors At-A-Glance (Fontas & Pinnell, 2008), conduct a running record assessment with the Teacher Copy: A-K Reading Assessment for Independent Reading Levels (TCRWP, 2011) to code the first 124 words of Isabelle’s Running Record (Concordia University, n.d.).
  • Score Isabelle’s running record following the directions below.

Note: An additional guideline regarding proper nouns is worth noting. Generally, if a student misreads a proper noun, the assessor should tell the student the correct pronunciation of the proper noun at the first miscue. This is counted as a miscue, but only once, even if the child continues to misread the same proper noun.

  • To tally errors and self-corrections: Across from each line coded, record the number of errors under the E column and the number of self-corrections under the SC column.
  • Count the number of errors from the E column and write that number at the bottom of the running record page in the E column. This would be the total errors. Count the number of self-corrections from the SC column and write that number at the bottom of the running record page in the SC column. This would be the total self-corrections.
  • Count the total number of words read aloud during the running record portion.

Compute Isabelle’s accuracy rate.
