Thesis: Abortions should remain legal because to make it illegal will cause more chaos than peace.

Topic1: Helps women psychologically

Topic2: The amount of abortions would not decrease but increase unsafe practices.

Topic3: The amount of kids in the system would increase

The word abortion is the most controversial word today.  Pro-life or pro-choice there is no in between when it comes to the argument about the procedure.  There are different types of abortions depending on how far along you are and any preexisting health issues a woman might have.  People who are pro-life feel that abortions should be illegal because it is a form of murder. The termination process of a fetus is basically is just like killing another human being. The argument from pro-choice is that women should not have to be told what she can or cannot do with her body. Abortions should remain legal because to make it illegal will cause more chaos than peace.

First, abortions help with the psychological complications that come with an unwanted pregnancy. Pro-life supporters continuously bring up the mental damage that comes from abortions and there was researched performed by professors from the University of California San Francisco. Antonia Biggs, Heather Gould and Diana Foster researched the mental state of women who are turned away from abortions. Their research in fact shows that “the effect of being denied an abortion may be more detrimental to a women’s psychological well-being than allowing women to obtain their wanted procedures” (Biggs, Gould, Foster).  Women have different reasons for wanting to end a pregnancy. In the women’s research 36% of the women could give two or more reasons for wanting to end their pregnancy. Reasons such as not being financially capable, partner-related issues, and health related reason were some of the examples that came up.  Denying them their right to an abortion can come with not only mental problems but needed financial assistance and specialized health care for high risked pregnancies.

In addition, the research Biggs, Gould, and Foster did on different abortion clinics came back with surprising results to them. It is a common way of thinking that it is usually the younger generation getting abortions for example teens and women in their early twenties.  In the research 436 /900 of the women who were getting abortion were actually over the age 26. 86 of the women were married, 494 of them had 1+ previous births, and 260 of them reported history of depression or anxiety disorder. This goes to show that every family situation is not the same. A women can still be married or have other children and still want to receive an abortion. The stress of a child or another child can cause anxiety or depression.

Second, the amount of abortions would not decrease but only increase unsafe practices. If abortions were to become illegal women were seek to more unsafe methods of getting rid of the pregnancy. In 66 countries abortions are illegal or only permitted to save the mother’s life.  “According to the World Health Organization, every year 21.6 million women worldwide have an unsafe abortion. Of these unsafe abortions, 18.5 million are in developing countries. Complications from unsafe abortions kill 47,000 women each year; these women make up nearly 13 percent of all maternal deaths” (baptiste).   Looking at the statistics, there is evidence that abortions would not end but come more dangerous. The prison rates would increase if abortions were made illegal.  “In El Salvador, a 1998 law went into effect that made abortion illegal with no exceptions—including rape, life of the mother, or incest. Women who are found guilty of having an abortion face two to eight years in prison. Punishment is widespread as well. Anyone found guilty of assisting in the abortion also faces two to eight years in prisons. Doctors and nurses who assist and perform abortions face six to twelve years behind bars” (Baptiste). The only thing that would come out of outlawing abortions will be long prison sentences, unnecessary deaths and the criminalization of pregnant women.

Also, the history of abortions in the United States was practiced before the 1880s, by that time abortions became illegal in most states. “Anti-abortion legislation was part of a backlash against the growing movements for suffrage and birth control an effort to control women and confine them to a traditional childbearing role.”  The legislation also was a way for women’s health care to be controlled more and to help damper the midwives from having too much power in the male medical establishment. Many women back in that time that were not rich could not be able to afford to go out the country and get the procedure. The poor women would have to settle for incompetent practitioners or were not able to find anyone to perform the procedure.
