Homework Assignment– Critique of Outside Speech

Homework Assignment– Critique of Outside Speech
Instructions: Watch a full-length public speech video by a prominent public figure on either
American Rhetoric website (www.americanrhetoric.com, click on Online Speech Bank) or watch an
appropriate TED Talk. You must be able to see the speaker actually making the speech and it must last
at least 3+ minutes. You may NOT use a video of an actor making a speech in a movie or a TV show. You
may need to do additional research to answer all of the following questions. If you want to use another
speaker than from either of these sites, you MUST get advanced permission from me or receive no credit
for this assignment! When answering the questions, do not just say “yes, it was effective” - you must
give specific examples on how or why it was effective! . For example, if you answered the speech was
organized “chronologically”, you should also provide evidence/examples of how you arrived at this
decision.
DO NOT USE Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech for this exercise
Due Date: Submit the file drop box on BLACKBOARD no later than 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, of the stated
deadline.
Late submissions will generally not be accepted.

internal previews & reviews, etc.). What were the main points? (give specifics) What
organizational pattern was used? (how do you know it was this pattern? Give specifics) Did it
flow logically –why or why not?

testimony, etc.) and use of sources. Give examples. Were they adequate for this type of speech?
Did the speaker use proper oral citations? (give examples).

elements of the speaker’s language were most effective? Give specifics 9. Describe the speaker’s delivery style, including both vocal and bodily delivery. Posture? Eye

not? How did you arrive at this conclusion? Was there anything distracting about the speaker’s
delivery? Give specifics.
10. What overall suggestions for improvement might you offer the speaker? (Do NOT say “It was
great, I can’t think of a thing!”)
