Jean Watson’s Caring Theory

Jean Watson’s Caring Theory

Hello class,

This week we are learning about theory concepts as part of the larger theory.  The concepts of a theory are components of the theory and must be defined in order examine what the theory is trying to explain. As stated in the lesson:  “the steps for conducting a concept analysis are as follows: 1) Select a concept; 2) determine the purposes of the analysis; 3) identify all uses of the concept; 4) define attributes; 5) identify a model case of the concept; 6) identify consequences of the concept; and 7) identify empirical referents of the concept”(Walker & Avant, 2010).

As an example of a concept analysis, I have used the article attached by Cline (2014). The author is trying to define the concept of individualized aging.

1. Select a concept:  Cline (2014) identifies: Individualized aging, not currently defined in the literature. Here you would define your concept.

2. Determine the purpose of the analysis: to define and clarify the concept of individualized aging, essential to high quality care.  Why is it important to complete a concept analysis on your concept?

3. Identify all uses of the concept:  in the article attached please see how all of the identified uses of the concept are described in the methods section and table.  You will need to search in the literature for uses of your concept.

4. Define attributes:  Cline (2014) defines the attributes of the concept individualized aging in the text and to clarify further uses the figure.  You can use a figure or diagram to clarify the attributes of your concept.

5. Identify a model case of the concept: Cline (2014) describes many examples of individualized aging models.  You would need to identify a model case of the concept in your post.

6.  Identify consequences of the analysis: two were identified by Cline (2014) after reviewing the concept of individualized aging- complexity of care over time and variable health outcomes. From your analysis, what were the consequences identified?

7.  Empirical referents:  measurements of the concept would need to be provided.  The Cline (2014) measures the attributes of heterogeneity, living with age-related and chronic conditions and increased risk for complications. How is your concept measured?

When you write your post, use your concept and go through steps 1-7.  Please give examples for steps 1-7.

You discussion post can then be used like an outline for your concept analysis paper. Using your TD, you would then expand upon Steps 1-7 in your concept analysis paper. I look forward to reading your concept analyses in the Threaded Discussion.
