Challenges that Impact Adequate Healthcare in Underdeveloped Countries

There are several challenges that impact adequate healthcare in underdeveloped countries. Natural disasters and non-communicable diseases are two challenges that account for global burden of diseases, causing 7out of ten deaths in developing countries, about half of them are premature deaths under the age of 70 (CDC, 2010).

Natural disasters referred to as catastrophes that arise from acts of nature such as flood, wind, drought and earthquakes. According to World Health Organization (WHO, 2010), a natural disaster is an event that outstrips the capacity of a society to cope with it.  Underdeveloped countries often live on lands that are marginal and subject to flooding or drought (Milstead, 2011).

Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) such as cardiovascular diseases (CVD), diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cancer have become an emerging pandemic globally in underdeveloped countries (CDC, 2010). According (WHO, 2010), it is estimated that the global NCD burden will increase by 17% in the next ten years, and the African region by 27%.

One strategy to address the challenge for a natural disaster is preventive planning.  This strategy should concentrate on long-term precautionary planning integrated into development planning utilizing, as far as possible, local awareness of the disaster problem (WHO, 2010). A long-term approach to disaster planning is a more effective way of offsetting disaster than a heavy emphasis on each individual disaster event and the relief measure which accompany it.

Most NCD deaths are preventable, and health systems are inadequate or unprepared or non-responsive to combat the threat of NCDs in most developing country settings (Bunyavanich & Walkup, 2001). A more concerted, strategic, and multi-sectorial policy approach is essential to help reverse the negative trends of NCDs in underdeveloped countries. Understanding various NCDs public health programs, exchanging ideas, networking, and partnering with experts from different clinical background, will allow a holistic approach at a lower level.

Nurses Advocating for Healthcare at the Global Level

    One strategy nurses might use in advocating for healthcare at the global level is humanitarian work. Nurses and health professionals are among those who have a global awareness of health disparities and willingly respond to the needs of the people in crisis situations (Tschudin & Davis, 2008). Nurses engaged in humanitarian work believe that they can have a practical impact and utilize their skills to their full potential (Tschudin & Schmitz, 2003).
