Evidence-based practice has become a commonly used term in health care in the past few years. It is important for nurses to know what it means, how to use it, and how important it is in protecting patient safety. Unhealthy lifestyle behaviors and risk factors, poor delivery of clinical and community, preventive services, and environments not conducive to health increase the risk of disease and injury and contribute to the leading causes of death. Regulatory boards in each state exist for the purpose of protecting the public. One way to do that is to be sure that nurses are practicing in a safe and competent manner. Locally, transformational nurse leaders within each hospital can share the vision for implementing EBP and embrace Magnet principles. At the system level, transformational nurse leaders can collectively allocate resources to create a system-wide online EBP education plan with EBP competencies and tool kit to increase RN exposure to EBP and standardize practice. Globally, promoting free and accessible EBP massive open online courses (MOOC) and sharing best practices online and at international forums such as Magnet conferences will help to lead, educate, and mentor nurses with strategies to systematically increase EBP uptake. As per my mentor and based on my project to implement a sensory/comfort room in the inpatient psychiatric unit to improve patient care, sensory rooms have contributed to a reduction in seclusion and restrain, a reduction in patients’ stress and agitation, an increase in patients’ relaxation and cooperativeness. in recent studies there was a substantial impact on the patient’s symptom report. There was also a decrease in number of people receiving medications. Sensory rooms are feasible to implement in hospitals and are beneficial to both patients and staff as an effective de-escalation tool.
