Evidence is a piece of information that supports a conclusion. “Evaluation is a systematic and objective assessment of an ongoing or completed project, programme or policy, its design, implementation and results. The aim is to determine the relevance and fulfilment of objectives, efficiency, effectiveness, impact and sustainability.” (UNODC, 2017). To evaluate evidence both qualitative and quantitative method used. Both methods are recognized as important when gathering, analyzing, and reporting data. Qualitative and quantitative research are very different but they complement each other, both types of knowledge that they generate are useful for nursing practice.

Qualitative Method: Qualitative method is primarily exploratory method. It is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. Qualitative research is systematic, methods used involves the use of experiences, situations and prospective of the people in the study to come up with a better understanding; as a result, qualitative findings make a distinctive contribution to evidence-based practice. Qualitative research can be helpful in assessing and discovering nurses belief and opinion about a certian practice that concerns patient care. Simplified, qualitative research methods focus on the content of the research; the facts involved. Not how many people, how much involved or any other numbers being researched. Before to use evidence in practice evaluating evidence by qualitative method is important to thoroughly understand evidence.

Quantitative Method: “Quantitative methods emphasize objective measurements and the statistical, mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires, and surveys, or by manipulating pre-existing statistical data using computational techniques. Quantitative research focuses on gathering numerical data and generalizing it across groups of people or to explain a particular phenomenon.” (USC Libraries, 2017) The main strength of quantitative methods is in their usefulness in producing factual and reliable outcome data. Using quantitative research can add precision and numbers to a qualitative narrative research study. Using one method to overcome the weakness of the other can add up to overall stronger evidence, it also can produce more complete evidence and also allows more research options for the researchers involved. The quantitative method is useful because it provides hard numbers but it does not give the why of the numbers, that is where qualitative method come in. Qualitative methods require observation and documentation of behaviors. Together, these two methods of information work very well to evaluate evidence. The integration of quantitative and qualitative data in the form of a mixed methods study has great potential to strengthen the rigor and enrich the analysis and findings of any evaluation.
