Question description
Please respond to the following with 200 words,12 font times roman, citations, and references.
In 2000, a series of service disruptions caused real problems for eBay’s large online business. During one of the worst site failures in company history, overloaded servers intermittently shut down, hampering users ability to check auctions, place bids, or complete transactions. Buyers, sellers and eBay were very unhappy, and a complete restructuring of eBay’s technological architecture followed.
Ebay realized that their centralized web server hardware architecture of just a few large and fast servers caused vulnerabilities, therefore, they changed to a decentralized hardware architecture comprised of 200 less-powerful servers – web servers, application servers and data-storage systems that use load-balancing to divide the workload amongst each other. According to Schneider (2015) “a load-balancing switch is a piece of network hardware that monitors the attached servers workloads and assigns incoming web traffic to the server with the most available capacity at that instant in time” (p. 392). This restructure enables eBay to provide the most reliable and best service possible to its customers.
