Mead

  • Argued that a storehouse of culturally approved standards emerge as part of the self during social interaction.

  • Mead suggested the self developed in four stages of role-taking:

  1. First stage: Children learn to use language and other symbols by imitating their significant others (i.e., important people in their lives, such as mother and father).
  2. Second stage: Children pretend to be other people as they role-play in games (e.g., “house” and “school”).
  3. Third stage: Children learn to play complex games that require simultaneously taking role of several other people.
  4. Fourth stage: Children take role of generalized other ð person’s image of cultural standards and how they are applied to him/her.
