Framework for Final Presentation The following is a checklist that can be used as you prepare your final presentation for our
class.
1) Determine your goal(s) in the presentation. At the end of the presentation what do you want
to accomplish? Share new information about a product, service, or circumstance? Build credibility and a stronger relationship with your audience? Persuade your audience? Build interest and anticipation about your topic?
2) Who is your audience? What value will your presentation have for them? If you can’t think
of a value then it is unlikely that this will be a successful presentation for you.
3) How can you grab the audience by bridging them with your topic through a personal
anecdote? For instance, if I was discussing credit reports with a group of young adults, I might
start by sharing with them how I learned the hard way (as a 22 year old) about how important it
is to pay bills on time.
4) Give your presentation a Thesis Statement. If you were asked to describe the content of
your presentation in one sentence -- could you?
5) Implement the tried and true practice of starting by telling them what you are going to tell
them, tell it to them, and then tell them what you told them. It is better to say less and say it
more often.
6) Be sure and give a few reasons that support your thesis; don’t overwhelm your audience
with examples. It is better to have a few memorable examples.
7) Be careful with your visual aids -- they should always support and enhance your
presentation. They should not be the focal point of your presentation. Practice PowerPoint
slide design that follows the principles described in the Effective PowerPoint Presentations
Handout.
8) Practice, practice, practice.
9) Enjoy yourself -- the only way that presenting gets easier is by doing it often.
