• 1) Entertaining their audiences was not a primary concern for the early realistic playwrights! The play was to be primarily an intellectual and educational experience. The playwright was a teacher (a moral instructor), the audience his pupils. Do you approve? Or do you think that first and foremost you want to be entertained by a play and would prefer to go elsewhere (and to another source than a playwright) for your social and moral instruction?
• 2) Should art, as the early realists asserted, present truth without concern for conforming to social codes and moral values and social acceptability? In other words, is it okay to be outrageous in the name of truth?
