Pythogorean Theorem

Question description

Find a postage stamp, Cheez-It, face of a die, computer key, or some other flat rectangular object of interest to you that measures less than one inch in each direction.

  1. Take a picture or draw a diagram of your object to include in your posting.
  2. Measure each side to the nearest eighth of an inch.
  3. Compute the perimeter and area of your object by hand and then check your answer using your calculator.
  4. Measure the diagonal length of your object to the nearest eighth of an inch.
  5. Check your diagonal measurement using the Pythagorean Theorem, illustrated on page 245 of your text. Use your calculator to find the answer.
  6. How does this answer compare with what you measured? What did you have to do to compare your answers?

Here are the formulas needed for the assignment. Let a and b be the lengths of the two sides of your object. Measure the diagonal and call it c. Here are the formulas:

Perimeter: P=2a+2b

Area: A=ab

The Pythogorean Theorem says that a2+b2=c2 . Compute  a2+b2  and compute c2 . Since your measurements are approximations, a2+b2  should be close to c2 but not exactly equal. That is expected.
