Cattell was interested in discovering the fundamental structure of personality. He utilized a statistical procedure named factor analysis to determine how many basic traits comprise human personality. More current research provides rather reliable evidence that personality structure along five basic dimensions. Research is continuing to determine which of these models is correct.
