You have a single cell of Strict fermenter (aerotolerant). Assume that the cell is in a closed environment with only 3 molecules of glucose available to it and is currently in the lag state of the exponential growth curve, so binary fission is not possible. Also, let’s simplify the situation further and ignore anabolic process that would consume ATP – they would be occurring, but it makes our calculations too complicated for the purpose of this exercise. Assume that O2 is present, and if your organism uses it, that it is not at toxic levels. (Reminder: 1 NADH produces 3 ATP, 1 FADH2produces 2 ATP)

Show your work and calculate the energy generated (ATP) in:
Â
a.      ATP created by substrate level phosphorylation (SLP) from glucose?
b.      ATP created by oxidative level phosphorylation (OLP) from glucose?
c.      ATP overall from glucose?
d.      What happens if O2 becomes unavailable - is ATP still made? If it is, how does this impact the overall ATP generation?
