Tax Evaluation Appeal Letter

Tax Evaluation Appeal Letter

There will be episodes in an accountant’s career when clients need to be represented to third parties. One possible occasion is in the case of tax evaluation or assessments.

When a client’s property is assessed and then taxed for well over what the property is worth, the client may need you to create a letter of appeal to the body who is assessing and then taxing that property.

For this assignment I would like you to create a case in which your client and his or her property has been assessed over and above what you and the client believes is the true value of that property.

Then, using evidence, create a letter of appeal on behalf of your client that argues that the assessment is too high and that the value—and therefore the potential property tax—must be lowered.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • The laws, codes and regulations of the community or taxing body
  • The different ways in which a property can increase or decrease in value
