aging-related topic

  • For this assignment, you are to identify a news article in the popular press about an aging-related topic that has been published in the past 3 months.  You are to briefly summarize the story and evaluate its credibility.  You are expected to read the article critically. Think about your critique as a conversation with someone about the topic, with you as the aging expert. Completion of this assignment will increase your awareness of aging topics in the news, improve your skills needed to critically evaluate articles in the popular media and effectively communicate your opinion with others.
  • For the summary (one page), identify the
  • author’s main idea or purpose,
  • arguments to support this idea,
  • findings of the research study (if applicable), and
  • author’s conclusions.

  • For the critique (one - two pages), evaluate whether

  • the author’s main idea is clear, logical, accurate, and well supported. Identify anything that was unclear and how it could be better explained to support the main idea,
  • the author provides a biased or objective perspective,
  • the information presented can be misinterpreted or misused by the lay public, and
  • the implications of the article’s information and for whom.

The article I chose is The Unique Disadvantage of Older Women Face in the Workplace. http://www.pbs.org/newshour/making-sense/the-unique-disadvantage-older-women-face-in-the-workforce/

It's a short article.

This is a snapshot on what I would like for to talk about in more detail, feel free to add your own opinions as well.....

What I would like you to address in this paper is that I disagree that older women have a disadvantage. More and more aging workers are deciding against retirement. They feel that you can get bored going on vacations and playing bingo everyday. With the economy taking a hit over the several decades, so did their retirement so the younger generation is finding it difficult to get experience because the aging workforce won't leave. I feel that in our current culture that the older females have the upper hand especially when they are taking better care of themselves by exercising regularly and eating healthy. They said 60 is the new 40 so would you want to retire at the age of 40, certainly not. I also believe that aging women in the workplace are assets to networking with other because women are masters of putting their ideas to the test although this comes with experience.
