Operational definitions deal with numbers and data sets. For instance, an example of an operational definition of intelligence would be a score on an intelligence test, as discussed in the article by McGrath (2011). Operational definitions work with measures. Think about the dissertation and how data has to be collected for quantitative research to be carried out. In order to collect the data, an operational definition is needed to describe how the data is to be collected. It is also important, because without the operational definition, other researchers would not be able to recreate the research effectively. A strength of operational definitions in quantitative research is that it helps those working with the data to be on the same page.

One weakness of operational definitions is that if done inefficiently, the study will suffer. For instance, in an article by Parker, (1993) he discusses the issue with poorly operationalized constructs. When this occurs, the results of the study are affected because the methods used cannot be sufficiently stated.
