Use sociological terms, principles, and concepts in your answers. This is not about your
opinion, but about how well you understand and can apply sociological thinking. (20 points
each!!)
IMPORTANT BEGINNING NOTES:
Use the lettering system below or points will be subtracted from your work.
Make sure answers are well thought out, thorough and make good use of the
material that this final exam is based upon, or points will be subtracted from
your work.
Late tests will receive considerably reduced credit. 1. How can your position on the socioeconomic ladder (USA) affect what college you go
to and, ultimately, what job you get?
2. What are the dangers of prejudice? (Don't be fooled, this looks like an easy question,
but a proper answer has a LOT of answers...dig deep!)
3. Americans can be anything they want to be, if they just work hard enough.
SOCIOLOGICALLY, explain why this is true or false. (Remember, reasons,
consequences, causes....)
4. Fully explain how, and why, the lower classes are not only needed, but are
purposely kept at the bottom of a society's stratification (include institutionalized
discrimination in your answer too.)
5.Explain how deviant behavior can cause positive change within a society.
6.Explain how negative and positive sanctions are used to encourage, and sometimes
force, others to conform.
7.Explain what "corporate welfare" is and why would it rarely be covered in the news when
major news outlets are privately owned corporations?
8. During the Vietnam War, the United States was full of protestors. They carried signs,
made speeches and did everything they could to call attention to their message that
both the government and the war were horribly wrong. This created conflict within
the United States, with the American people choosing sides. Their behavior would
be called "deviant” by sociological standards. Using the Functionalist Theory, explain
the protestors' role in society and what might be caused as a final result. 9.What part do immigrant workers (Mexican tomato pickers, for example) play in the
United States? What are the consequences for the US when they do work and if
they didn't work? Use what you know about sociology and the Functionalist Theory
as your framework for answering the question.
10.How has the Columbus assignment, way back in the beginning of this quarter,
affected how you feel about:
a.The educational system
b.Your socialization
c.The socialization you will give your children
d.Sociology as a way of thinking
