Analyze a Short StoryAssignment Overview

Analyze a Short StoryAssignment Overview

In this assignment, you will write a multi-paragraph essay that analyzes a short story that we have read in class. You should consider the question you choose to respond to (from the prompts below) your thesis question. Your answer to this question is your thesis, and your thesis paragraph will introduce the main idea of your paper. In the supporting paragraphs, you will draw the readerâs attention to examples from the story that support your thesis. You will be expected to use quotes from the text and to format and punctuate those quotes appropriately.

While structure and grammar will continue to count heavily for this essay, content will also be considered. Make sure to make use of our class discussions (or the Canvas Pages if youâre in an online section) to inform your thesis. Weâve discussed all of these poems in detail during class, and you should use what you learned during those discussions to inform your answer/thesis. That means if you missed a discussion on a particular story, writing about it is probably a bad idea!

Topic Questions

Read each question below. Make sure you fully understand each question (look up any words you may not understand) before choosing the one to which youâll respond. Write an essay that responds to one of the following questions:

· Flannery OâConnorâs âParkerâs Back,â is about a man who undergoes a kind of religious conversion via the tattooing his body. His religious wife, Sarah Ruth, despises his tattoos as âidolatry.â What could OâConnor be saying about religious imagery? Does she think Parkerâs tattoos are idolatry or iconic (i.e. idol or icon)? In your analysis, consider what you know about idols & icons (from class discussion or the Pages on CANVAS) and how the plot of the story moves forward.

· What epiphany does the narrator have in Raymond Carverâs story, âCathedralâ? How does the narrator change at the end of the story? In your analysis, identify the narrator as a static or dynamic character.

· To what does the title of Jennifer Eganâs story, âOut of Body,â refer? Which character or characters are âout of bodyâ? In your analysis, consider how the author uses point of view to contribute to the storyâs main idea.

· What do you think Isabel Allendeâs âThe Judgeâs Wifeâ says about masculinity? In your analysis, consider how Allende establishes theme. Also, how does the use of ironycontribute to the theme?

Expectations for this assignment

We have discussed paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting as means of using supporting examples from the text. You will have to decide which method of using examples is most appropriate for what it is youâre trying to support.

Be sure that your quotes are relevant to what it is youâre trying to explain and that you provide context for the quote as well as your interpretation of what the quote means. Remember that quotes should appear in âquote sandwichesâ and be correctly punctuated and formatted.

Formatting Issues

· Your paper must be between 750 and 900 words long.

o Be sure to include a word count for the essay at the top of the first page (under your name & date).

· Use MLA document format described in the Little Seagull Handbook.

o Paper must be double-spaced and in 12pt., Times New Roman font.

o Use one-inch margins all around, name and page number on every page.

· You need to have a title for your essay (do not put your own title in quotation marks, italics, or underline).

o Remember that the titles of short stories and poems should appear in quotation marks.
