Audience Exploration Prompt

Audience Exploration Prompt
In this assignment you will use your imagination and your knowledge of people, cultures, and societal
trends to reach a better understanding of your intended audience.
First, imagine an individual person who is a representative member of your audience. You can even give
them a name if you want to, or you can base this assignment on a person you know in real life if that
person is a member of the audience you are trying to reach.
Then, describe an average day in this person’s life. What time do they wake up? What do they eat for
breakfast, and where do they eat it? How does the person spend their day? At work? At school? At
home? Where do they work, and what kind of work do they do? Do they plan to continue to this work
or do they intend to advance or change careers? What kind of errands does the person have to run?
Who does the person spend time with, and in what capacities? How does the person get from one place
to another? What kind of music does the person listen to, and how/where does the person listen to it?
How does the person spend their leisure time? When does the person go to bed? These questions are a
good starting point, but you should feel free to go farther. Your goal is to describe the person’s daily
experience as thoroughly as possible.
Of course not every member of your audience will have the exact same daily experience, and you will
want to be careful not to rely too much on stereotypes. The aging liberal hippie who ate organic granola
for breakfast might eat a cheeseburger from McDonald’s for lunch, for example. Thinking about why can
help deepen your understanding of this (imagined, but probably accurate) person—and that’s the goal of
this assignment.
You might touch on the topic of your Informed Argument, but you don’t have to. The purpose of this
assignment is more to help you come to a fuller understanding of the values and circumstances that
govern the lives and experiences of the people you are writing to. This understanding will help you write
to that audience more effectively.
FORM: You might think of this assignment as a character sketch. It should be in paragraph form, but it
will likely read more as a narrative or story than an essay. Your paper should be 1½ to 2 pages long in
standard MLA formatting.
EXPECTATIONS: You will be evaluated on the depth and quality of your portrayal of your audience
member’s experience. You are also expected to write descriptively and concisely, and your grammar
choices should adhere to the standards of academic English.
