Shu Ting

After you have read the poems, answer the following questions:

  1. (a) What does Shu Ting compare to an assembly line in her poem of the same name? (b) How do these comparisons contribute to the mood of the poem?
  2. Shu Ting composed her poem "Also All" in response to Bei Dao's poem "All."
  3. (a) What is Shu Ting's interpretation of the poem she is responding to?
  4. (b) Explain how the following lines express her disagreement with "All"?
  5. "Today is heavy with tomorrow-
  6. The future was planted yesterday."
  7. In her poem "Fairy Tales," why do you think Shu Ting exchanges the words "heart" and "world" in the poem's refrain?
  8. Language that creates sensory impressions in a reader's mind is referred to as poetic imagery. Use ofimagery is like the writer painting a picture with words. Although these impressions are often visual, they can also relate to the other senses.
  9. The Misty Poets have a reputation for their use of surprising and highly personal imagery. To Western readers, the images created by the Misty Poets may seem imaginative and appealing but hardly political. However, in China's closed society, the use of this poetic device, even in poems that are not overly political, is like a declaration of freedom.   These images give a voice to their aspirations for democracy in China.
  10. (a) With her use of imagery in "Assembly Line," what senses does Shu Ting appeal to?
  11. (b) Explain how the imagery of this poem might be a description of Chinese society?
  12. "Testament" can be considered the speaker's last will because the poet bequeaths his mother his pen and declares how he wants to be remembered. It is a statement of belief because the poet expresses his view of life in China and his belief that death, for him will be a means of liberation. The theme in "Testament" is that the speaker's death will lead to a rebirth. Many of the Misty Poets' themes represent acts of rebellion.
  13. (a) In the last two lines of the poem "Testament," what is surprising about the image presented by Bei Dao?
  14. (b) Identify the two things Bei Dao is comparing in this image.
  15. (c) Explain how this comparison contributes to the theme of the poem.
