Research is the backbone of all the sciences including sociology. This assignment will allow you
to use and develop some of the concepts and theories you have learned and will now want to
apply. This term’s project is 1 book review from a list of books provided to you in your course
outline. Your choice of book for review is restricted to the book titles provided in the course
outline. The list corresponds to topics the instructor delivers to class in his lectures. This is both
to tie the two components of the course together (lectures topics and written assignments), and
at the same time allow you to use course concepts in highlighting your reading of the book you
choose.
Structure of your book review; what we expect in your review:
(1) You must include the full title and proper reference of the book you are reviewing.
PLEASE use APA for this.
(2) You must include your name and student number in the same page you cite the book
under review. (3) (a) You must identify the central thesis in the book. In other words, what is the author
arguing in the book and wants to convince the reader of? [SOME AUTHORS POSE A
QUESTION AND THE THESIS IS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION POSED] (b) Does the
author develop her argument using specific and original concept(s) to do so? Or, does
she borrow a significant sociological concept to capture her findings? (c) How does the
author develop the argument throughout the book? That is, how is the argument
enfolded throughout the book?
(4) Once you have done #3 above, then identify the theoretical perspective(s) you see the
author fitting into. The three main theoretical perspectives are structural functionalist,
conflict theory and Symbolic Interactionism. With which of these does the author align
with in the text?
(5) You must point out the specific methodologies the author uses to collect data. What are
the merits of this methodology(ies)? What are its limitations? Did the author overlook a
key methodology to gain data to better answer the question posed in researching and
theorizing? Would a different methodology yield different data thereby questioning (or
confirming) the argument(s) being made?
(6) You must critically evaluate the book’s overall appeal. For example, is the book
accessibility in style and prose? If yes, explain (with at least one example). If no, also
explain with at least one example.
(7) Finally, would you recommend this book to a friend? If so, provide an explanation. If no,
do likewise.
The length of this book review should be 6-7 pp only and double spaced. Please pick a book
from your own research/reading interest and have fun with it.
