“..One interesting topic might be the switch from steel to aluminum for automotive manufacturing to increase fuel 
mileage. At the Port of Toledo and at many Great Lakes ports both products are handled. Traditionally, European steel 
has been imported and grain is reloaded on those ocean vessels traveling outbound. Mergers and consolidations have 
really shaken up the steel industry in the past decade and traditional supply chains have been disrupted. Some US and 
Canadian production has replaced steel formerly imported from Europe. Aluminum has been a growing business for 
Toledo‐ We are a designated delivery point for the London Metal Exchange. Our aluminum arrives on barges from the 
Canadian smelters.
 
 
 How will the trend in the automotive industry impact trade of these commodities on the Great 
Lakes?  
  
Also, three reports are now out and available at www.marinedelivers.com. One is the system economic impact 
report. Another is a report on the social and environmental impact of shipping. The third is a report on the safety of 
marine transportation.  
 
 Summarize the results of these studies.  
  
 Opportunities for shipping petroleum products on the lakes are increasing. Some suggest that these products should 
not be allowed on the fresh waters of the lakes. Others believe that marine is a safe way to transport the products 
compared to other alternatives (pipeline, rail, truck).  
  
 With domestic oil and gas production on the rise, there is a debate if the US should be allowed to 
export these products to foreign markets. How would this affect domestic and global fuel prices if 
US crude is available to foreign countries?  
  
 Is there enough Jones Act tanker capacity to competitively move product on the water between US 
ports?
