The demographic features of this community are diverse. The median age is 41.5 years of
age. While there are about 15,000 people in the town, the male to female is 50/50. The races of
the town include white, Hispanic, black, Asian, and mixed. Whites are the majority at a 77%
followed up by Hispanic with 12%, 6% black, and 3.5% Asian. The mixed races make up for
1.13% of the towns make up. Most of the citizens are native born to the United States. In 10
years, the population has grown almost 90%. The average household income is around $70,000
which is above the state average. The education level for majority, which is 93%, includes a high
school diploma. Only 45% went on to a bachelor’s degree or higher. The unemployment rate is at
6.9% but the jobs that are occupied by Apollo Beach’s residents include construction, retail,
professional/scientific, finance, food service, and manufacturing. This also includes a number of
cops, nurses, and teachers. The town’s average commute time to work is 30 minutes[Apo].
In comparison with the rest of the state, Apollo Beach is above the Florida average in
most categories. The household income is $24,000 more than the state average and the house
value is $27,000 more than the state average. Other categories on the higher end included health
condition, diet rate, dental health, poor mental health, bachelor’s degree recipients, and doctoral
degrees. Where Apollo Beach is under the state average was unemployment rate, sex offenders
living in the town, and single parent homes. These categories were not under by much, but still
below[Apo].
Politically, the town has registered as mostly democratic however not necessarily voting
for that party. The city does have a chamber of commerce consisting of religious leaders, Journal C business owners that state the mission of the chamber of commerce is “To commit ourselves to
growth through proper planning, new membership acquisition and servicing of existing members
through value-added projects.” [Sou14]. There is no mayor or other government officials.
Upon observation of the citizens, the town is a positive morale. There are positive
greetings and the children are positive in his or her views of school. The community is looking to
improve due to the projected influx of people in the coming years by being proactive with
projects to be completed such as bike paths, sidewalks, and canal upkeep. This ongoing
improvement seems to keep the residents in good spirits as it gives everyone something to be
involved in and strengthens the community spirit[Pla05].
The vulnerable population in this community would be the elderly of ages 70+. The
closest retirement home is 15-20 miles away and some of these residents have never lived
anywhere else. There are multiple generations of families all within this town and to have a
nursing home available where it is not such a hindrance to visit may persuade some of the
population to go into an assisted living facility and may ease some burden on the extended
family as well. Journal C References
