TASK:
Â
Write a 3-page visual analysis paper (typed and double-spaced). The paper should present a complete visual/formal analysis of a single work ofart. The purpose of this assignment is to learn to look thoughtfully and sensitively at art, to analyze formal aspects of a work of art (such as composition/design, space, form, color, line, etc) and to explain how these elements work together to convey a meaning.
Â
You may select a work in any medium (painting, sculpture, print, mixed media, photography etc.) from your book but it has to come from within the chronological confines of this course (e.g. Renaissance-Modern).
Â
PROCESS:
Â
For this assignment, you should visit budget some time to find the work of art that interests you
from the material we are studying in class. As you start examining the work, ask yourself
questions with regard to its subject matter, technique, style, and meaning. After careful
observation of the work, distinguish the most significant elements of its structure. Analyze and
describe these in a clear and ordered manner and demonstrate their interrelation. Be selective; do
not give a blow-by-blow account of everything you see. Although parts of your analysis will
consist of description, your main task is to go beyond the description to show how the visual
elements of the work communicate meaning to the viewer.
Â
Be sure to advance a thesis (which in this case will be your particular interpretation of the work)
in the first paragraph of your paper and then proceed to support it with arguments from your
visual analysis. You may compare and contrast the piece you selected with other works of this
type, or variants, but do focus on the primary work you selected.
Â
Writing clearly and meaningfully about art takes a great deal of time and patience. You may
want to do a brief research related to your work, especially in relation to an art period the work
represents or symbolism you may need to discuss. As visual analysis is essential to your
discussion, please include illustrations of the works that you discuss in the form of photocopies
(labeled with artist, title, date and medium), whenever possible.
Â
Please see a separate handout on how to write an effective visual analysis, which is on your
Educational Portal, along with a visual analysis paper sample.
