SOCIOLOGIST

1. List the people you surveyed and the groups they discussed. What are the similarities and
differences between the groups you learned about from the surveys? Use concepts from the lesson and
specifically discuss the type of group(s), norms, and phases of group/team development. Give specific
examples from the surveys. --Answer below: I surveyed two of my friends that are supervises at the State Prison, that both hold different leadership
positions but at the end of the day they both have same responsibilities at one point.Talking to them I
came to realize even tho they conducted different duties with small and big group they both handled
situation differently from one another. Both of them when it comes to communication use their past
experiences as the tool to find out how to approach the group and/or pass the information. One is a
former Police Academy Instructor(PAI) and the other one is Criminal Justice Trainer/Academy
Adviser(CJT).We have two different groups here.
While the PAI is mentoring new prisoners on the basics rules of the prison the CJT is there to let the
prisoners what jobs will prisoners have while in prison .The norms for both groups are closely the same
as for the prisoners while they being transitioned from regular civilians to the new prisoners. When the
new prisoners arrive to the State Prison and are met with CJT they are already expected to act
accordingly as well to follow the rules and their punishments are the same as they are entering the new
chapter of their lives. :2. What responsibility do the members of a group have in establishing the group communication norms
and following these norms? What did the people you surveyed tell you about this? Include information
from your own participation in group communication situations. Give specific examples. --Answer below:
The new prisoners are reminded of norms that are expected from them when it comes to certain classes
or sessions ,where the will be instructed o how to do certain task this goes for new prisoners as well as
the prisoners that they have been there for longer time.I haven't had a chance to talk with the prisoners
but what I have seen on the show or movies or heard in a real life it seems that some of the same things in regards to following norms by the members are still been done as they have been done in the past, as
they are reminded that is in their best interest that they make sure that they follow the norms and what
is expected of them .Like their behavior needs to be in check or the use of the specified things like tv
time or phone time . :3. What did the people you surveyed tell you about how their group enforced the group communication
norms? How does that compare to key concepts from the lesson such as power or status? Include
information from your own participation in group communication situations. Give specific examples. --Answer below: The enforcement of the group norms are the must for these two groups as the prisoners enter the
facility ,they are still new to this new world and are limited on some of the things than they were before
coming to the prison .The information that I have gathered from these two groups is that enforcement is
the must to enforce the group norms because it is beneficial for members entering the facility so when
they go out to behave themselves and not to come back to the prison again. It is crucial for them to know
how to behave after they are done serving their time .The norm enforcement is not really of power it is
more of the status as the majority of group members(Prisoners) dont come from the troubled family or
prisoners family they dont understand structure at the time .I believe that is why there is people who are
educated or well trained who work in these type of facilities who are given them the better
understanding of what life can look like if the turn on to behave themselves. .:4. Use one of the communication interaction patterns on page 249 to explain the communication
interaction patterns you noticed from the people you surveyed. Was the pattern intentional? Why or
why not? Give specific examples. --Answer below:
We can use the Chain Network here because that's how the most of the information gets decimated. This
pattern is not intentional the reason why I say this not always do they have to have prisoners back brief
them on what information they have given to ensure they understand what is going on.At the same time
it is necessary when they have some new comers (prisoners) question everything which becomes a
problem.Chain Network is one of the most effective pattern in this type of communication. Not only does
it give them understanding on how well their prisoners are able to understand their tasks and orders but also gives them a better understanding of how they can adjust the way that they communicate such
things to certain individuals. .:5. What did the people you surveyed tell you about evidence of communication behaviors that
demonstrated conflict in group communication? Was the conflict necessary for the group to problemsolve and further develop relationships to meet the group’s goal? Give specific examples utilizing key
concepts discussed on pages 252-253. --Answer below:
The information that I have gathered is that prisoners come to the prison get their briefing and there is
not much to talk about.Orders are given by the leaders and they are completed by prisoners. The conflict
phase occurs among the prisoners not that often between the leaders because they have been educated
and trained to deal with these issues. The conflict sometimes does help solve the problem because
leaders get a better idea of who, what ,where ,when. Sometimes does resolve it but sometimes it doesn't
like in these facilities can be scary and critical .The reason why I say scary and critical is because these are
the people who are dangers and in order for some things to be their way they are willing to do big things
like hurting someone or themselves ,and then the leaders would fee like they are not communicating
right with them.
