PRACTICING CULTURAL RELATIVISM

PRACTICING CULTURAL RELATIVISM

At the heart of cultural relativism is the practice of being nonjudgemental.
This Discusssion is designed for you to show that you are able to practice communicating in a respectful relativistic way about topics that are unusual, unpleasant or unexpected. Your success in discussing something that you found "weird" or "horrible" in a nonjudgemental way will determine your grade. Discuss some of the things that you found "weird," "strange," or unexpected in your readings (textbooks for this class). Remember to be culturally relativistic and sensitive while still experiencing the cultural differences
Remember to post at least twice in the discussion in order to receive credit. Once early in the week and one later.
Either book First Fieldwork or Search of respect Other people’s work
1. On chapter 11 in "First Fieldwork," the narrator talks about how she hates the coffee hours by describing it as the most horrifying part of the Danish culture because of its tradition of devouring as many sweets as one desires and chatting for excessive hours to get some bonding time with neighbors and to release stress. Although an individual from another culture may view this Danish part of culture as a waste of time or an unhealthy habit that can ultimately lead to diabetes, the Danish people may simply view this satiating custom as one of the ways to get "hygge," a Danish term for the quality of comfort time that arouses conviviality in terms of an individual. ... 2. While reading the book In Search Of Respect I got very disturbed. It was very hard for me to read about the different things that the people in El Barrrio used to do. For example, Bourgios went into very detailed conversations with Primo and Creaser regarding their childhood. They were telling Bourgios about how they were 11 years old and they saw their friends their own age rape their teachers. Additionally, throughout the book there was a lot of cursing and bad language being used which I am not used to reading and hearing. Coming from a background and growing up never using
these types of words, it was very disturbing for me to read them and knowing that little kids used these words in El Barrio. Also, it was very hard for me to read how the kids raped their teacher. Although, I go to a public college and I am openminded, there are some things like rape, drugs, sex,
and bad language that I try to block out in my life. Therefore, it was very hard for me to read that kids in El Barrio grew up in that type of environment and I did not enjoy reading this book because it was out of my comfort zone.
WRITE YOUR OPINION ABOUT HIS OPINION ( 2~3 SENTENCES ARE FINE) 1. While reading “In Search of Respect”, I found it very interesting how the high unemployment rate in East Harlem directly caused many people to turn to the streets and start producing and selling drugs. The data that is given in the book shows that more than half of the people living in East Harlem at the time should not be able to meet their basic needs, however it is evident that people are not starving. After reading a few chapters, I found it surprising that the high unemployment rate was not because people there were lazy and refused to get jobs, but rather because they were unable to find ones. The Puerto Ricans living in East Harlem at the time, lacked the social skills and knowledge required for most jobs in the city. Instead, drug selling was able to provide them with double or triple the income they would have gotten paid working legal jobs.
